The Second Demographic Transition in Europe. Family and fertility changes in modern European societies: explorations and explanations of recent developments

This Euresco conference (a Program of the European Science Foundation) was organised in collaboration with the new EAPS Working Group on the Second Demographic Transition.

Since the 1960's, fertility and family behaviour in Europe has entered a new phase of radical changes, reflecting and contributing to new developments in social organization, beliefs, attitudes, economic
progress and medical knowledge. The conference addressed the current empirical and theoretical knowledge about recent developments in fertility and family behaviour in modern societies. Topics included
were: 1) relation of family and fertility changes to demographic changes in the area of migration and mortality, 2) development of methods for measuring demographic changes in low fertility contexts,
3) possible social, economic or biological "limits" of fertility decline, 4) separation of parenthood from partnerships. The conference also fostered the development of new theoretical explanations for fertility
and family behaviour in modern societies, including a focus on the bio-social and sexual aspects of fertility behaviour.
